The story of Riku is a long tale of misunderstanding between curiosity and answers. Riku fell in to darkness betraying his friends, Sora and Kairi. But, alot of people may tell you it was because he was jealous of Sora and wanted to find a way to be better than him. However, it's much different than that. An anyamous website I visited (I wish I could remember the name!) had very detailed questions and respones from the game creators of Kingdom Hearts of Riku's choices.
Apparently, Riku joined darkness for a certain reason. (Kingdom Hearts Players Will Understand Better, Mostly If You've Beat The First Kingdom Hearts.)He was more aware of what was bound to happen. Riku knew that with Sora's pure heart, the Keyblade would choose him. So Riku had to take action, darkness would be after Sora and would stop at nothing to either take over him or destroy him. And with that might I remind you, Ansem would need to take a body, Riku couldn't let that be Sora so he braved himself for sacrifise to save his friend, Sora. (On the other hand for Kairi, it was said Riku feared Malificient would try to harm her if Riku didn't follow orders.)
